Your digital photos need help. There's free help to fix them.

Everybody these days seems to have a digital camera, and go around taking pictures of just about everything. Any you know what? Most of those pictures just aren't that good. There are various reasons why.

Wait, you say. Weren't digital cameras, whether in a cellphone or alone, supposed to make photographers out of anyone? Well of course, but there's still is, and always has been, a difference between a bad photographer and a good one.

So, why do your photos suck? Sometimes the subject just can't be seen well. It's either not enough light, or your subject isn't standing still, or your subject is out of the picture before you deploy your camera. Or worse, your subject is blurred AND not well lit. Strange poses never work, nor does posing in general.

Then there's the backgrounds that don't work. Like the lamp pole growing out of your subject's head. Or the tree branches coming out the side of someone's head. Skin that's the wrong color. And other things too numerous to mention. Don't worry, there's help available, and for free. And, I hate to be the one to tell you, but if you're relying on a cellphone to take good pictures, it just ain't going to happen.

For some photo basics, I recommend this tutorial at idigitalphoto.com. It's short and to the point. And at morguefile.com, there's a more in-depth tutorial with assignments.

Quicksilver (Free).

At first glance, Quicksilver is a launcher.

When opened, it will create a catalog of applications and some frequently used folders and documents. Activate it, and you can search for and open anything in its catalog instantly. The search is adaptive, so Quicksilver will recognize which items you are searching for based on previous experience. It also supports abbreviations, so you can type entire words, or just fragments of each. When not in use, Quicksilver vanishes, waiting for the next time you summon it.

Quicksilver's greatest strength, however, is not search. Any item you are able to find, drag, or otherwise pull into its universe is endowed with many potential uses. Hitting <tab> takes you to the action field, where you can use the same adaptive search to select what you would like to do. Among other things, files can be emailed, copied, compressed. Text can be modified, transmitted between programs, or searched for on the web. Some actions even support an indirect object, so you can send an item to a person, move files to another folder, or open files with a specific application.

<== Moving a file.

Quicksilver can be given the ability to understand the data inside of files, allowing you to work with data in new, faster ways. Plug-ins add both new items and new actions, allowing you to run scripts, send instant messages, dial phone numbers, look up words in a dictionary, queue up songs in iTunes party shuffle, and much, much more.

Frequently used commands can be bound to triggers, giving you the ability to execute them immediately by hitting a hot key or using the mouse on a corner or edge of the screen.

Tutorials here.

Nodal (Free).

Nodal Version 1.0 Released!

Nodal is a generative software application for composing music. It uses a novel method for the notation and playing of MIDI based music. This method is based around the concept of a user-defined graph. The graph consists of nodes (musical events) and edges (connections between events). You interactively define the graph, which is then traversed by any number of players who play the musical events as they encounter them on the graph. The time taken to travel from one node to another is based on the length of the edges that connect the nodes

Nodal is free software available for Mac OS X based computers.

Working with Nodal

Nodal does not make any sound by itself – it only generates MIDI data. You will need a MIDI synthesiser to hear the output that Nodal is making. Nodal is compatible with any MIDI synthesiser. For simple demonstrations we recommend SimpleSynth.

Nodal will also work with Apple's GarageBand software.
