Sharpshooter (Free).

Sharpshooter is a small application which aids the management of screenshots. When you take a screenshot on Mac OS X with Command-Shift-3 (or with another variation) Sharpshooter shows a window where you may review the picture and choose what to do with it.

You can either rename it from its default name to something more descriptive, move the screenshot to the Trash, or cancel the operation keeping the screenshot as it is.

Sharpshooter is a background agent application so you may want to add it as a login item to always have it running in the background. You can control Sharpshooter through the menu status item on the right side of the menu bar.

Cyberduck (Free).

Cyberduck is a free FTP and SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) browser with an easy to use interface, integration with external editors and support for many Mac OS X system technologies such as Spotlight, Bonjour, the Keychain and AppleScript.

What is FTP? FTP or File Transfer Protocol is used to transfer data from one computer to another over the Internet, or through a network.

Bean (Free).

From the developer's website:

Bean is a small, simple word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), with many niceties added to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. Bean is powered by the same text engine as Apple's Text Edit, but it adds live word count and the ability to adjust printed margins. Lots of other features too. MS Word, OpenOffice, etc. try to be all things to all people. But sometimes you just want the right tool for the job. That is Bean's niche.

Bean is not a replacement for MS Word. It does not do footnotes or hierarchical styles. Further, it is only partially compatible with MS Word's .doc format. Bean is also not a competitor for AbiWord, which is a full-featured word processor. Don't even try to compare the two...apples and oranges.

LinkABoo (Shareware).

Today's Mac Goody is not free software, but I'm mentioning it because it performs a useful function I've been unable to find elsewhere.

Have you ever wanted to create in a document a hyperlink to a specific email message in Apple Mail? Unfortunately, there is no built-in way to do this. Enter LinkABoo. LinkABoo allows you to create a hyperlink in many types of documents to specific email messages. No longer do you need to search your email by subject, sender, or contents. Just click a link to take you to your message.

Note: LinkABoo only works with Apple Mail, and only in OS X 10.4. From an email from the developer, it can be used in MS Office and NeoOffice, but a workaround is needed. Contact the developer for more information.

VLC (Free).

VLC is an open-source, free application that can play all sorts of audio and video files, DVDs, VCDs, as well as numerous streaming protocols. There are several packages: the Universal Binary, an Intel package, Web browser plug-in for Intel, a PowerPC package, and Web browser plug-in for PowerPC, as well as packages for older versions of Mac OS X.
