Weather Vane is a MacOS X utility that retrieves your local weather forecast and displays it in the menu bar. Place it in your Login Items, and it will launch when you log in. Pixer is an application that helps you to scale (or rotate, add pad and, crop) PNG, JPG, Tiff, PSD , BMP or PICT images in batch (RAW support, only for Leopard users, is still in beta).

Drag an image, a group of images or a folder into Pixer and type the size you want (for example 500 for 500 pixel): Pixer will resize them to the desired size.

That's all!

USAGE

Hint 1: leaving the input window blank will create icons for the images without resizing them.
Hint 2: Pixer preserves transparency when creating an icon from a 24 bit PNG (for PNG 24bit, Pixer icon abilities preserve transparency!)?
Hint 3: you can use letters instead of numbers: H for 800 pixel, M for 480 pixel, L for 305 pixel and T for 80 pixel. If you use letters instead of numbers, Pixer will insert a standard prefix and postfix in the name of image (image.jpg becomes H_image_1.jpg).
Hint 4: to scale an image by percentage, just type the percentage (e.g: 50%, 74%, 16% etc) and Pixer will scale the image by that percentage.
Hint 5: to rotate an image just type the rotation degrees (e.g: 90°, 45° etc ).
Hint 6: to flip the image horizontally type "fh", to it vertically type "fv".
Hint 7: to crop or pad use two dimensions (e.g "1440x900" instead of "1440").
Now you can choose color pad (Leopard only).
Hint 8: the Jpeg button converts the non-jpeg images into jpeg images. You can use Jpeg ability with all others features.

About Word Counter

Word Counter is a Macintosh OS X application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others.

Text can be typed, pasted, or dragged into the window. Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. It can show the progress achieved towards a set goal for the total number of words and characters. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window. Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word.

Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), Apple's web archive (webarchive), and others. This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.

What is GIMP?

The GNU Image Manipulation Program, or GIMP, is a raster graphics editor used to process digital graphics and photographs. Typical uses include creating graphics and logos, resizing and cropping photos, altering colors, combining multiple images, removing unwanted image features, and converting between different image formats. GIMP can also be used to create basic animated images in GIF format. It is often used as a free software replacement for Adobe Photoshop, the most widely used bitmap editor in the printing and graphics industries; however, it is not designed to be a Photoshop clone.

Now for something a little bit different. X11 is not a program that does anything by itself; by installing it it allows you to run other programs. But no, it has nothing to do with running MS Windows or Windows programs on your computer.

From Apple's website:

X11 for Mac OS X is an implementation of the X Window System that makes it possible to run X11-based applications in Mac OS X. Based on the X.org Foundation releases -- the leading reference implementation of X11 -- X11 for Mac OS X is compatible, fast, and fully integrated with Mac OS X. It features includes full X11R7 compatibility including an X window server, Quartz window manager, libraries, and basic utilities such as xterm. It is optional but installed by default on Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard. The X11 SDK headers are available as part of the Xcode Developer Tools.

Why X11? In the future, I will recommend some open source programs that require X11. Occasionally, not too often.

Freecell Card Game (Free).

What's freecell?

Freecell is a solitaire card game in which almost any deal can be won, if you have enough skill. The card table consists of four free cells (top left), four stacks (top right), and eight columns (bottom).

A shuffled deck of cards is dealt face up into eight columns. Your goal is to move all of the cards from the columns to the stacks. The stacks must be made in rank order, starting with aces, then twos, threes, and so on.

Cards may be moved between columns, within some rules. You can only move one card onto another which has the next rank up, and the cards must be of opposite color. For example, you can move the five of hearts onto the six of clubs.

Finally, cards may be moved to and from the free cells at the top left. Each free cell can hold one card at a time. Empty columns act like free cells, too.
